Pheromone therapy is a new and natural way to manage behavioural issues in animals and to help control stress related problems in cats and dogs.
Pheromones are messages an animal leaves for itself or others to communicate. Humans can’t see or smell pheromones – only other animals of the same species can detect them. Pheromones can offer a feeling of safety and comfort by providing a constant source of reassurance. Commercial products that emit pheromones are a natural and safe option that can aid in the management of fear, anxiety and stress.
An example of a pheromone product used in cats is Feliway®. Feliway® uses a synthetic analogue of the cat appeasing pheromone that is produced by the face of cats, used to mark their territory as safe and secure. This pheromone creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat’s own environment.
Feliway® can help cats adapt to new environments or changes in their regular routine and may reduce unwanted behaviour such as urine marking or spraying and scratching, especially in multi-cat households. In various studies, Feliway® reduced spraying on vertical surfaces (such as walls or doors) in up to 90% of the cases. It has also proven to improve appetite and help to manage stress-related health conditions such as idiopathic cystitis (a condition in which irritation in the bladder causes symptoms like those of a bladder infection). Spraying a blanket inside your cat’s carrier has also been proven effective in reducing anxiety associated with car rides and veterinary visits.
Pet owners can purchase the Feliway® pheromone in two different formats. A plug-in diffuser can be used to maintain a constant level of pheromones in the pet’s environment. A spray is available and is beneficial when spraying a cat’s bed or carrier before they are introduced to a stressful situation. Owners can also spray a wall or couch to discourage scratching or marking. Each product has its own benefits to help your cat’s specific needs and both methods can be used at the same time as it is impossible to overdose on pheromones.
The use of pheromone therapy is a great way to address stress and anxiety in cats; however, depending on the severity of the condition, it may not entirely solve the unwanted behaviour on its own. While recommended for its calming effect, it may need to be used in conjunction with other behaviour modification treatments. Talk to your veterinarian at Centrepointe Animal Hospital about pheromone therapy and find out if it is appropriate for your cat.
