In the case of a major emergency which requires your evacuation from your home, you will need to plan an alternative if your animal can’t go with you. For example, many shelters will not allow pets. Therefore, in your emergency planning, identify friends or family that will be able to take your pets into their home. Otherwise, you will need to find a boarding facility or pet-friendly hotel. It is important that you consider these options before an emergency occurs.
Here are a few other items that you need to consider in order to be ready for an emergency:
- Proper identification with a collar and tag and, ideally, a microchip as well.
- A sturdy leash and harness.
- Food for at least four days along with feeding bowls.
- Crate or carrier.
- Litter and litter box (for cats).
- Toys, treats, and blankets.
- Medication and dosage information.
- Vaccination records.
- Your veterinarian’s contact information.
- Your contact information so that those caring for your pet(s) can reach you.
Hopefully you’ll never be in a situation to actually use this plan, but it is best to be prepared in the unlikely event of a major emergency.
