How to Apply Drops to Your Dog’s Ears

When your dog has an ear infection, administering ear medication can be challenging. It is very important to remember that your dog’s infected ears may be causing pain or discomfort and that a normally gentle and passive dog may react by struggling, scratching or even biting. Until the medication begins to take effect and control the problem, you may need to muzzle your dog before performing this procedure.

Make sure you have read the instructions and understand the amount of medicine you are to administer in your dog’s ear and whether you are treating just one ear or both ears. Be sure to mix liquid ear medication thoroughly.

With the ear medication within reach, prepare a safe place where you can comfortably handle your dog. It may be easier to place a small dog on your lap or wrap your dog in a towel with only its head exposed.

Once all materials have been gathered and you and your dog are both in a relaxed state, begin by following these step by step directions and hopefully you will be able to perform this procedure with ease and success.

1)    Draw the ear medication into the dropper or hold the squeeze bottle with your dominant hand.

2)    Using your other hand, gently pull the flap of the ear up and slightly back, exposing the ear canal. With smaller animals, you can do this with the last two fingers of the same hand that is holding the ear medication. If doing so, place the other hand under the dog’s jaw to help support his head.

3)    Apply the prescribed number of ear drops, placing the dropper at the ear canal opening (unless you are treating the outer part of the ear).

4)    Once you have applied the required amount, continue to hold the ear up to keep the ear canal open.  Gently rub the base of the ear against the head in a circular motion. You should hear a “squishing” sound as you massage the ear for about 10 seconds.

5)    Release the ear and let your dog shake his head. If the medication contains a wax solvent, dissolved debris will likely be shaken out, which you can gently wipe away from the surrounding area with a tissue or cotton ball.

6)    When finished, always remember to praise your dog with love and treats!
