Vacationing Without Your Cat

Travelling is a big part of the holiday season.  As a result, cats are often left unattended at home.  Cats are believed to be very independent and self-sufficient animals; however, as independent as they may be, they still require daily care.  There are many care options for your feline friend while you are on vacation.

If you are leaving your cat at home during your holiday, it is recommended to never leave them unattended for more than a day or 2 at the most.  Ensure that there is always access to fresh water and food during his or her time alone.  Toys can be provided to keep them occupied; however, ensure that they are not harmful or potentially hazardous if swallowed.  Larger toys and cat posts or trees provide good stimulation.

If you choose to leave your cat alone for a day or two, your cat’s food and water should be changed daily.  Their litter box should also be cleaned out on a daily basis.  Otherwise, your cat might become unhappy.  Automatic feeders and water dispenser may be used but are not 100% accurate or reliable.  Cats must eat on a daily basis.  If your cat stops eating for just a few days, possibly due to unfavourable conditions or loneliness, it can result in a serious and potentially life threatening condition.  Consequently, it is essential that your pet not be left alone for long periods of time.

Sending your cat to one of Ottawa’s many boarding facilities is one of the best care options available.  If you are vacationing for a long period of time or if your cat is on any medications or has a medical condition, it is highly recommended to have your cat looked after by a professional.  With your cat safely in a boarding facility he or she will have daily attention, supervision and access to emergency care if needed.  It is important to ensure that your cat has up to date vaccines, especially the Leukemia vaccine.  It is also wise to have flea coverage while your cat is being boarded to prevent unwanted friends returning home with him or her.

Some cats are very anxious when removed from their regular environment.  If you are more comfortable having your pet stay at home, it is important to have a friend, family member or pet sitter stay with your cat.  This grants your cat the proper daily care and attention that they require all in the comfort of their own home.  It can often be difficult to find someone to stay in your home, but even having someone stop in to check on your cat at least once a day is better than having no supervision.  It’s important to monitor your cat and ensure that they continue to eat, drink and not become depressed by your absence.
