How to Apply Drops to Your Cat’s Ears

When your cat has an ear infection, administering ear medication can be challenging. It is very important to remember that your cat’s infected ears may be painful and that a normally gentle and relaxed cat may react by struggling, scratching or even biting. Until the medication begins to control the problem and ease the discomfort, you may need to wrap your cat securely in a towel or blanket in order to apply the medication.

Make sure you have read the instructions and understand the amount of medicine you are to administer in your cat’s ear and whether you are treating just one ear or both ears. Be sure to mix liquid ear medication thoroughly.

With the ear medication within reach, prepare a safe place where you can comfortably handle your cat. Next, place your cat on your lap. It may be easier to wrap your cat in a towel with only its head exposed. The first few times, it may be helpful to have someone else hold the wrapped cat while you apply the drops.

Once all materials have been gathered and you and your cat are both in a relaxed state, begin by following these step by step directions:

1) Draw the ear medication into the dropper or hold the squeeze bottle with your dominant hand.

2) Using your other hand, gently pull the ear up and slightly back, exposing the ear canal. You can do this with the last two fingers of the same hand that is holding the ear medication. If doing so, place the other hand under the cat’s jaw to help support his head.

3) Place the dropper at the ear canal opening (unless you are treating the outer part of the ear) and apply the prescribed number of ear drops.

4)  Once you have applied the required amount, continue to hold the ear up to keep the ear canal open. Gently rub the base of the ear against the head in a circular motion. You should hear a “squishing” sound as you massage the ear for about 30 seconds.

5)  Release the ear and let your cat shake its head. If the medication contains a wax solvent, dissolved debris will likely be shaken out, which you can gently wipe away from the surrounding area with a tissue or cotton ball.

6)  When finished, always remember to praise your cat with love and treats!
