Most cats don’t drink enough water. Because cats are so self-sufficient, we assume they know what’s best for their health and, often, they do; however it’s the owner’s job to ensure they consume the proper amount of water.  The following are few tips that will encourage your cat to consume more water:

1. Location – Most cats are very sensitive to the positioning or placement of a water bowl. Even a little unexpected foot-traffic can be enough to keep your cat from having their next drink. Keep fresh water bowls in multiple spots to maximize your cat’s comfort.
2. Wet food – Wet food can be a great way to introduce more liquid to your cat. Be sure to discuss any diet change with your veterinarian to ensure that your cat has the best diet for their lifestyle.
3. Add Water – Consider adding water or a low sodium chicken broth to canned food or discuss other flavour options with your veterinarian. You want to find something that’s healthy and appealing to your cat. Remember, each cat is an individual and even the texture of food can sometimes make a difference.
4. Ice Cubes – Consider adding low sodium tuna or clam juice ice cubes to your cat’s water. The ice will not only keep the water cold longer, but can add a tasty flavour.
5. Fountains – Since many cats prefer a moving stream of water, drinking fountains are a fun way to encourage your cat to drink. You may notice that your cat will also enjoy a drink from a leaky faucet, if you don’t mind, why not allow them. (although, we recommend getting that leaky faucet fixed!) 
6. Bowl Variety – Give your cat options. The only way you’ll know your cat’s preferences is to swap out different bowls at different times. Better yet, keep several different bowls out at all times and see which one drains the fastest. Also, keep in mind that your cat probably would prefer his own water bowl, one that he doesn’t have to share with the dog.
7. Fresh Water – Lastly, cats like fresh water! Make sure to change their water bowl at least once a day and wash out the bowl completely with mild soap and water regularly to keep it from getting a slimy build up.
