What You Need to Know When Boarding Your Pet

Finally, the vacation season is here and it’s time to get away!  In a perfect situation, your pet will come with you – but what if you have to leave him/her behind?  Ottawa has many boarding services; however, it can be difficult to choose between the various options.  Here are a few key tips when you need to board your pet:

  • Ideally, get a referral from friends, veterinarians, groomers, or trainers.
  • Make an appointment to visit the kennel facility before you board your pet.
  • Book as soon as possible during prime vacation time to ensure a spot.
  • If you have time, leave your pet at the kennel for a night or two to familiarize your pet with the kennel and reduce seperation anxiety problems.
  • Make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated and up to date in his vaccinations.  Contact Centrepointe Animal Hospital for advice on what vaccines are required.
  • Bring a familiar object from home with your scent (bed, blanket, toy, t-shirt).
  • Bring extra medication if applicable.
  • Bring your own pet food and treats and advice the staff of your pet’s feeding schedule.
  • Inform the facility’s staff of any behaviourial issues, medical conditions or food allergies.
  • Provide an emergency contact that can be reached in the event of an emergency.
  • Inform the staff  of your veterinarian’s contact information in case of a medical issue.
  • Inform the staff of your pet’s temperament, tricks, and favourite activities.
  • When you leave the kennel, say a quick goodbye and do not linger so your pet doesn’t become overly concerned.
